Conjunctivitis, commonly called pinkeye, is a common eye infection that can be caused by allergies, chemical irritation, a virus or bacteria. The conjunctiva is the tissue on the inside of the eye, and when it becomes irritated or infected, it begins to swell and makes the whole eye look pink. Eye drops and ointments are available to treat pinkeye, but there are some herbal remedies that may also be effective at easing inflammation.
Chamomile
The herb chamomile is soothing, and not just as a drink. Apply a moistened chamomile teabag against the affected eye, and hold it there for approximately 10 minutes. Repeat this several times a day, but be sure to use pure chamomile teabags without other flavorings or ingredients.
Elderberry Blossom and Fennel Seeds
Create a tea from elderberry blossom, and use it as a gentle, herbal eyewash for eyes irritated by conjunctivitis. You can also create a gentle wash using boiled fennel seeds.
Aloe Vera and Turmeric
Aloe is a soothing substance, and you can use the natural juice of the plant to ease conjunctivitis irritation. Squeeze the plant onto a clean rag or wash cloth, then hold it against the eye. You can also create an eyewash made from the natural aloe vera plant juices.
Turmeric is another herb that can soothe the itch of pinkeye. Use 2 tsp. of turmeric mixed with 1 cup of boiled water, then soak a clean cloth in the solution. Apply the warm compress to the affected eyes.
Powdered Root Bark of Barberry
Boil this herb for 30 minutes in 1 cup of water, then use the solution as a gentle eyewash. You can also soak a clean cloth in this herbal solution, then apply it as a warm compress to itchy eyes.
Eyebright
This herbal solution made from Euphrasia officinalis can be used as an eyewash when mixed with water and applied with a clean piece of cotton. You can also use an eye cup to hold an Eyebright tea solution (1 tsp. of the herb infused in 1 cup of hot water) against the eye.
