Detoxing for a day or two before beginning a new eating or diet plan is a great way to jump-start weight loss and get your body ready for the good food you'll be feeding it. Cardiologist and "You on a Diet" author Mehmet Oz recommends a healthy drink to help rid the body of toxins, while providing it with fiber and antioxidants. He warns to avoid drinks such as coffee and colas because of their high sugar and caffeine content, which impede the body's ability to heal itself.
Water
There is nothing like water to help keep the body fit and in great working condition. Water is useful in detox because it helps to clean out the kidneys by flushing toxins out in the urine. A study conducted by Brenda Davy, PhD, an associate professor of nutrition at Virginia Tech, showed that participants who drank two 8 oz. glasses of water before meals ate less and lost more weight than those who did not. It's likely that the water gave a greater feeling of fullness. Water is also Dr. Oz's choice for keeping the kidneys working to detox the body.
Green Drink
Dr. Mehmet Oz's Green Drink helps the body to lose weight and detox by providing nutrition and fiber in each serving. The drink combines spinach, cucumber, celery, ginger root, parsley, apples and the juice of both lemons and limes for a powerhouse drink that Dr. Oz reports drinking nearly every morning.
Grapefruit Juice
A study conducted by physician Ken Fujioka at the Scripps Clinic in California showed that people who added grapefruit to their diets either in juice, fruit or capsule form lost more than four times the weight of those who got the placebo. Grapefruit drinkers lost an average of 1.5 kg, while placebo drinkers lost 0.3 kg during the 12-week study. The juice needs to be consumed prior to each meal.
