A ligament is a band of elastic tissue that connects bones and secures joints. When you tear a ligament, medically, this is a sprain. MayoClinic.com reports that sprained ankles are common and easy injuries to sustain. Rolling your foot in an unnatural direction is enough to stretch or tear a ligament. Providing first-aid to a torn ligament in the ankle should include rest, icing, compression and elevation. A foot that cannot sustain any weight, especially after two or three days, should be evaluated by a medical professional to rule out a fracture or more serious injury. Securing the area with a bandage wrap is one way to protect the ligament and allow healing.
Step 1
Cut a 1-by-4 to 3-by-8 inch thick felt pad into a horseshoe shape. Family Doctor.org, an information website produced by the American College of Family Physicians, recommends this extra reinforcement before applying the wrap. Lay the cut pad on the outside of the ankle--the area facing away from the other foot--so that it encircles the bony projection between your ankle and foot. This is the joint that connects the bones of the foot to the leg. No adhesive is necessary on the pad; the wrap will secure it in place.
Step 2
Unroll an elastic wrap bandage. Place one end of the bandage at the bottom, or underside, of your foot in the center of the arch.
Step 3
Wrap the bandage using a figure eight pattern so it covers the foot completely, circles around the felt support attached to the joint and continues approximately one to two inches up the leg. When wrapping, leave the heel of your foot exposed.
Step 4
Apply paper tape around key spots on the bandage to secure it. For example, add tape to the end section, wrap one piece around the top of the foot and another around the bandage on the ankle. Do not pull either the wrap or tape too tightly. This may cut off the blood flow. If the wrap feels uncomfortable, remove it and reapply it. You should feel only slight pressure from the bandage. If the bandage slips or moves, it may not be tight enough. Rewrap the ankle, pulling securely as you create the figure eight pattern.
Tips and Warnings
- Some swelling and discoloration can be expected with a sprain. If the pain is severe or does not let up, see your doctor to have the foot examined. Take an over-the-counter medication and place ice on the ankle to manage pain. Stay off your foot as much as possible to allow the ligament to heal.
