A fad diet like the Master Cleanse may help you drop pounds, but it may not be the healthiest way to lose weight, according to the American Heart Association. Stanley Burroughs, the creator of the Master Cleanse, is not a doctor. He was charged with second-degree murder when a patient with cancer died while using the Master Cleanse diet under Burroughs' care. Use the Master Cleanse Diet only under the strict supervision of a doctor.

Ease-In

For three days before starting the detoxification portion of the diet, Burroughs recommends adjusting the foods you eat to make transitioning into the diet easier. On day one, eliminate processed foods, dairy and meat from your diet and eat only living foods, like fresh fruits and vegetables and fruit and vegetable juices. On day two, eat nothing but clear vegetable broths, fruit and vegetable juices and water. On day three, the day before beginning the detoxification portion of the diet, drink 2 liters of fresh squeezed orange juice diluted with water, according to Stanley Burroughs in his book, "The Master Cleanser."

Detoxification

According to Mark Reinfeld in his book "The Complete Idiot's Guide to Eating Raw," the detoxification portion of the Master Cleanse involves drinking only a lemonade mixture for approximately 7 to 10 days. Mix 1 1/4 cup spring water or filtered water, 1/10 tsp. cayenne pepper, 2 tbsp. grade B maple syrup and 2 tbsp. lemon juice or about the juice of 1/2 of one lemon. Mix the ingredients and drink as often as you'd like. Make a large batch of the mixture or make one glass at a time.

Ease-Out

After finishing the detoxification portion of the diet, ease out by reversing the steps you followed to ease your body into the diet. One day after finishing the detox, drink only fresh-squeezed orange juice diluted with spring water. The second day, eat only clear broths, vegetable and fruit juices and water. The third day, eat only living ingredients, like fruits and vegetables. Do not eat processed foods, meat or dairy products. Resume your normal eating habits on day four.
