When you are suffering from a headache, it might seem the easiest route to relief is through over-the-counter analgesics. But drugs such as ibuprofen, aspirin and acetaminophen all have disadvantages and side effects including stomach upset and other gastrointestinal symptoms and in the case of acetaminophen, increased risk of liver failure. Interactions with prescription drugs may also be a concern, and none of the over-the-counter choices are safe during pregnancy. Fortunately, there are plenty of pill-free headache cures to be found in the realm of alternative medicine.
Acupressure and Acupuncture
Acupressure can provide almost instant relief to many kinds of headaches. Apply one to three minutes of continuous firm pressure to either of the following points; be sure to massage points on each side of the body for the best effect. Large Intestine 4, located in the web between your thumb and first finger, helps relieve tension headaches located in the front of the head. Another important point for headache relief is Gallbladder 20, located at the back of your head just below your skull and behind your ears. For chronic headaches, consulting a licensed acupuncture therapist for more extensive treatment might be in order.
Herbal Teas
Herbal teas are a popular first resort for headache relief. A cup of peppermint or chamomile tea helps you relax and soothes your nerves, with little to any side effects. Ginger tea works well on sinus headaches. Drink any of these as needed.
Ointments
Ointments rubbed directly into the temples can help relieve headaches. Make sure to avoid the eyes and any broken skin. Try a dab of arnica gel or Tiger Balm. Another alternative is to mix a few drops of peppermint oil into a carrier oil such as almond or grapeseed and massage this mixture into your temples. A few drops of lavender oil can be used as an alternative.
Caffeine
Caffeine can be tricky. For some people, it triggers headaches; for others, it helps relieve them. Withdrawing from caffeine suddenly can also cause withdrawal headaches. However, caffeine also speeds absorption of other remedies into the body, and it may also have some direct effect on blood vessels in the head. Try a cup of coffee or tea along with any other remedies suggested here.
Prevention
Sometimes the best way to cure chronic headaches is to prevent them from occurring in the first place. Headaches have been linked to food sensitivities and allergies as well as low blood sugar, so eat regular meals and avoid sugar, processed meats, MSG, red wine, aspartame and chocolate. Make sure you get regular, restful sleep. Do not smoke and avoid secondhand smoke.
