Low testosterone levels in a man are often linked to a low sex drive. While that is one of the most significant symptoms of this problem, it is not the only one. Many men are hesitant to check with a doctor because they are embarrassed to have this problem. However, that embarrassment is misplaced. A doctor can help an individual find out what the problem is and help to come up with a solution.
Sexual Issues
As men get older, a lower sex drive is fairly common and not indicative of any particular problem. However, when sex drive disappears all together, this is not normal. The problem needs to be addressed by you and your physician. Other sex problems associated with low levels of testosterone include infrequent or weak erections and a reduced sperm count. Normal testosterone levels are 300 to 1,200 nanograms per deciliter (ng/dL). Doctors often measure testosterone in the morning, when most men have their highest readings.
Decrease in Muscle Size
A lowered testosterone level can be accompanied by a loss of strength and a decrease in muscle size. Biceps may lose their strength and definition, and other muscles that produced explosive strength may also grow weaker. As testosterone levels decrease and strength decreases, the individual may also see some breast development.
Loss of Bone Density
A lowered testosterone level can lead to a loss of bone density and the development of brittle bones. As a person ages, this issue can lead to bones that can be fractured or broken rather easily. This problem can be treated with hormone replacement therapy.
