Without pores, the body could not naturally cool itself by sweating, says the Maricopa University website. It also wouldn't be as moisturized, since pores produce sebum that keeps skin looking and feeling supple. Despite the positives associated with skin pores, they can also cause a few problems such as acne or enlarged pores. Though it's impossible to remove pores or conceal them completely, you can reduce their visibility.

Step 1

Wash your face with warm water and a gentle exfoliant at least once per day for dry to normal skin and two to three times per day for oily skin. Dead skin cells accumulate on the surface of your skin and gather around the outside of your pores, causing them to appear larger, says DermaDoctor.org. Removing the built up skin cells reduces the appearance of pores.

Step 2

Boil 4 cups of water and pour it into a large bowl. Place your face approximately 6 inches over the bowl and drape a towel over your head. The towel should cover both you and the bowl so that no steam escapes.

Step 3

Stay in this position for 10 minutes. Rinse your face with cool water and use your second clean towel to gently pat dry. The steaming process opens pores and removes built-up sebum and trapped dirt.

Step 4

Apply a thin layer of facial moisturizer that contains alpha hydroxy acids. According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, alpha hydroxy acid exfoliates the skin and gently peels away remaining dead skin cells.

Step 5

Speak to your dermatologist about a more advance procedure if you remain unhappy about the size of your pores. Dr. Thomas Heggen on DermaNetwork.org says that treatments vary from case to case, but include chemical peels, laser resurfacing of the skin, microdermabrasion and prescriptions.

Things You'll Need

  • 4 cups of water
  • Exfoliant
  • Pot
  • Bowl
  • 2 towels
  • Alpha hydroxy acid moisturizer
