When an acne lesion does severe damage to the skin an indented scar or raised scar may form, notes American Chronicle. These scars form due to a loss of collagen and tissue or an over-production of collagen to compensate for the damage, in the case of raised scars. For such severe scarring, it is best to consult a doctor regarding clinical treatment. Mild scarring in the form of red blemishing, however, can be treated with herbal home remedies.

Gotu Kola

Gotu Kola is an aquatic plant from the southern hemisphere. According to GrannyMed, this herb contains antioxidants which encourage the growth of new skin and control the development of collagen production in scar tissue. It is also said to increase blood flow to wounds and increase the suppleness and elasticity of the skin, while its soothing effects reduce inflammation.

Aloe Vera

''Readers Digest: 1001 Home Remedies'' notes that the gel, which is resident in the leaves of the Aloe Vera plant, contains compounds that promote healing in wounded skin via increasing blood flow to the site and dilating blood vessels. This makes the body's production of collagen more efficient and thereby helps in the healing. It is also said to contain soothing and anti-inflammatory agents, which will help reduce the swelling and redness of newer blemishes.

Application

Gotu Kola comes in an over-the-counter ointment which will be available at most drug and health stores. Simply massage the ointment into the acne scarring. It is said to be most effective on new skin damage, so use as soon as a blemish appears.

Aloe Vera gel is best used in its purest form. Remove the gel straight from an aloe Vera leaf, rinse under cold water and apply to the scarring. Massage in.

Considerations

More evidence must be gathered from herbal remedies like Gotu Kola and Aloe Vera as still very little is understood about them and their effectiveness is not medically proven.

Both herbs can cause skin irritations and should not be applied to deeper or leaking wounds and the sensitive eye area should be avoided.

Consult your doctor before using Gotu Kola or Aloe Vera a acne scar treatment.

Alternatives

Get microdermabrasion treatment. Not to be confused with dermabrasion--which is a clinical grade procedure involving a wire brush that removes the skin cells-- microdermabrasion can be administered by a beauty therapist and involves a light mist of crystals being sprayed on the skin which then removes the outer most layers of skin cells, reducing the appearance of mild scarring. Acne.org is quick to point out that the results of this treatment are minimal and many sessions may be needed to see significant improvement.
