Crohn's Disease Symptoms & Treatment

Crohn's disease, a type of inflammatory bowel disease, causes inflammation of the digestive tract and can result in high levels of discomfort that may eventually prove to be life-threatening. However, there are several symptoms that will allow you to quickly diagnose it and a number of treatments available to fix it.

Diarrhea

Crohn's disease results in the secretion of fluid in the intestine. Unfortunately, the colon can't handle the increased fluid levels and this creates diarrhea, one of the most common symptoms of Crohn's disease.

Bloody Stool

The already inflamed tissue is easily affected by food passing through the system which may cause bleeding, noticeable in the stool.

Abdominal Pain

Inflammation of the digestive tract causes swelling of the abdominal region, which leads to abdominal pain and cramping. Nausea may accompany this.

Lack of Appetite

The pain and cramping may lead to a loss of appetite and a decrease in digestion ability. Weight loss will likely follow.

Treatment

Doctors may prescribe a number of different drugs to control Crohn's disease--likely one or a combination of anti-inflammatory drugs, antibiotics, immune system suppressors, and other nutritional products and pain medications.
