What To Look For

When buying a shoe for BMX riding, consider how stable and ergonomic it feels. Look for a shoe with a non-slip grip and a soft flexible rubber sole that grips the bike pedal well. Some riders prefer harder soles. That is fine, but you want a shoe that has an evenly flat sole and ankle support. The most popular brands for BMX riders are Adio, Beloe, DC, Orchid, Vans, Etnies, DVS, Osiris and Nike 6.0.

Common Pitfalls

Make sure the shoes have good ventilation because your feet will get sweaty when you ride. Ensure that the shoe laces up snugly and has proper support for your ankles. Check that they are the right size. The shoe should still be comfortable and not too tight when you stand on your toes. Don't be swayed by a shoe that looks good. It's more important that the shoe fits the contours of your feet, is well padded and allows for movement on the pedal.

Where To Buy

You can securely order a pair or BMX shoes online from Orchid footwear's website, DC Shoes or Dan's Comp, the largest online store for BMX gear. If you want to try your shoe out before purchasing it, you should be able to find a pair at Vans stores, Nike stores and other leading sport and bike stores around the country.

Cost

Nike stores sell Nike 6.0s for between $45 to $85. DC Shoes are available from $40 to $200. Vans are between $40 to $70. If you are purchasing a pair online, be sure to factor in the shipping charges.

Comparison Shopping

If you want a softer pedal hugging sole, go for DC shoes. For a harder sole, try Nike 6.0s. For performance grip, Vans are good as they come with little waffle-shaped squares on the sole to grip the bike pedal. For more ankle support, try Vans Owen Hi Vulc Mu.

Accessories

Most BMX pedals have a wide, platform-shaped pedal with small pins sticking out for extra grip. To increase power, some riders might want to use clipless pedals. Shimano MX30 and Wellgo make sturdy clipless pedals.

Insider Tips

Skateboarders also use BMX shoes because both require a firm and flexible grip and flat soles.
