Colloidal silver consists of microscopic silver particles suspended in water. The natural antibiotic properties of silver have been well-known to medical practitioners for many years, and eyedrops containing silver are still used to protect the eyes of infants born to mothers with certain infections, according to the Mayo Clinic. Using colloidal silver nasal spray may provide some of these benefits. However, overuse of any product containing silver can lead to a skin condition called argyria, in which the skin turns permanently grey or blue. Before using colloidal silver in any form, discuss the risks and benefits with your physician.

Sinus Infections

Applying colloidal silver directly to the sinuses by using it as a nasal spray may be more effective than taking colloidal silver as a tincture, according to the Natural Health and Longevity Research Center. This is because applying the colloidal silver to the mucous membranes in the nose allows it to work directly on the bacteria responsible for a sinus infection. If your infection lasts more than two days, or if at any time you develop a fever or severe pain, see a physician immediately, whether or not you are using colloidal silver.

Disease Prevention

In addition to treating infections, colloidal silver may be helpful at preventing them, according to the Natural Health and Longevity Research Center. Taking colloidal silver either internally or as a nasal spray may prevent invading bacteria from establishing themselves, thus leading to infection. Because colloidal silver does not destroy body tissues, using the nasal spray daily should be painless, according to the Natural Health and Longevity Research Center. However, daily use may lead to argyria, so consult your physician before taking colloidal silver as a preventative.

Viruses

Like sinus infections, viruses that cause respiratory symptoms, like the common cold, can be uncomfortable and make it difficult to breathe. Colloidal silver may be effective against viruses, according to Dr. Ray Sahelian. Using colloidal silver nasal spray before coming into contact with someone whom you know has a virus, or after you've caught one yourself, may help prevent or shorten the time you're sick. Remember to wash your hands in order to help prevent the spread of viruses.
