According to the International Basketball Federation, 450 million people play basketball on some kind of level across the world and the one thing that you have to know how to do if you want to play basketball successfully, is how to shoot the basketball the correct way. If you do not know how to shoot, you will not be able to score, which will lead to games being lost and a short basketball career. Fortunately, there are many drills that you can practice in order to make sure you play basketball at a high level for a long period of time.
Shooting Form
A common term that is used in basketball to help a player shoot with the correct form is B.E.E.F. According to the online site, Basketball Coach, B.E.E.F stands for: Balance, Eyes, Elbow, and Follow Through. When shooting, you want to have good balance so when you shoot, the ball goes where you are aiming; if you are off balance, it can cause you to shoot the ball in a different direction than you intended. You also want to have your eyes fixed on the basket so you can clearly see where you are shooting. As you go to shoot, you want to have your elbow directly underneath your hand so the ball goes straight at your target; if your elbow is not in line with your hand, it can cause the ball to go offline causing you to miss. Finally, you want to follow through after your shot with your arm fully extended and your hand pointed directly at your target in order to get the best accuracy.
Five-Spot Drill
In this drill, pick five different spots on the court that you want to shoot from and that will be shots you will take in a game. Your goal is to make five shots at that spot before you move onto the next location. Even if it takes twenty shots to make five, continue to shoot until you make all of them; over time, it will take less attempts to complete this drill.
Hot Shot
Hot shot is a shooting drill that involves you continuously moving to different locations and taking one shot at each spot. To complete this, pick seven spots on the court to shoot from and mark them with cones. Set a timer for 40 seconds, as this is as much time you will be given to complete on round of this drill. Once the timer starts, you attempt to shoot from as many spots on the court as you can and you cannot shoot from the same spot two times in a row. Count how many baskets you made, repeat the drill again, and see if you can beat your previous score. This drill simulates a real game situation as you will never be standing still in a game, you will always be moving to take your shots.
