According to the Mayo Clinic, acne is caused by hormonal, hereditary or environmental factors. Acne that develops deep under the skin is called cystic acne and can be painful or embarrassing. Cystic acne appears as a red bump that is raised or as a flesh-colored bump that is felt under the skin. There are natural remedies that are useful in treating cystic acne, although there is little scientific evidence to prove the efficacy of these treatments. Always consult with your dermatologist before using any natural remedy to treat acne.

Step 1

Treat the acne cysts with apple cider vinegar. Apple cider vinegar has antibacterial and anti-fungal properties and can be used to reduce the severity of acne cysts. To use, start with a mixture of one part vinegar to three parts water. Apply the mixture to the cysts twice daily and do not rinse off. As your skin gets used to the vinegar and if it is not irritated, move up to one parts vinegar and two parts water or use the vinegar undiluted on the skin. Do not use on areas where you have recently shaved.

Step 2

Use lemon juice and rosewater. Grannymed.com recommends mixing equal parts of lemon juice and rosewater. The lemon juice has antibacterial and astringent properties and rosewater is calming for the skin. Apply to the skin twice daily and do not rinse off. Discontinue use if a rash appears or the condition gets worse.

Step 3

Apply ice to the cysts. Place an ice cube or ice pack on the acne cyst for up to 15 minutes. Use a new ice cube if the first cube melts. You may want to place the ice cube in a plastic baggie so you do not drip water down yourself. Use this treatment whenever you notice redness, pain or swelling in any cyst.
