Volleyball drills can be practiced together with teammates or by yourself. The can also be led by a coach or practiced in a recreational setting. It is vital to practice specific individual skills and to learn how to bring the individual skills together for the games. A coach should be introducing new drills slowly into practices. By gradually introducing new skills, the players are able to familiarize themselves with each exercise. It also aids in avoiding injuries that are a result of doing a drill incorrectly.
Toss and Pass
The toss and pass is a passing drill in which the players will pair up into groups of two. The partners will face one another while standing a few steps apart. Player one softly tosses the ball into the air and player two has to pass it. In this drill, the player who is passing should place focus on keeping her knees bent and keeping an athletic stance. The ball should also be hitting the passing player on the same location of the forearms. Player two should practice her passing for five minutes or so before tossing the ball so her partner can practice passing.
Reach and Bounce
The reach and bounce drill is an exercise that helps players learn how to penetrate the net and block incoming shots, according to Volleyball.com. Set up a chair about 1 1/2 feet away from the net. Have a player grab the volleyball and stand on the chair. From the other side of the net, a player should jump as high as possible, use his hands to reach over the top of the net and snatch the ball away using both of his hands. As the jumping player is falling back to the ground, he should throw the ball behind his head, run to the service line as fast as possible and come back to the net, assuming a defensive position. You can also create a line at the net's base to allow the drill to be practiced by multiple players at once.
Dead Fish
The dead fish exercise helps teach servers how to hit the ball from the service line with strength, accuracy and confidence. For this drill, the players should be separated into two groups. Each group selects two players to lay down on the floor. Each player will alternate serving the ball, with the servers trying to aim for the players that are on the floor. If the serving player misses a player with her serve, she must lay on the floor as well. The first team that has all of the players on the floor loses the drill.
