Blood pressure is the force at which blood pumps through the arterial walls when it gets distributed throughout the body. When your blood pressure is 140/90 or above, it is considered high. This is also known as "hypertension," and it can increase your chances for heart attacks, strokes, aneurysms and complete heart failure. According to the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute (NHLBI), one in three U.S. adults has high blood pressure (HBP). The quickest way to treat it is through conventional and home remedies.
Step 1
Talk to your doctor about medication. Various prescription medications can be used to reduce the workload of your heart, flush excess salt from your system and relax your blood vessels. Examples of these include diuretics, beta blockers, ACE inhibitors and calcium channel blockers.
Step 2
Cut back on your sodium intake. Sodium causes water retention in the body which can increase your blood pressure. Reduce your sodium intake by not adding salt to your food and avoiding frozen dinners, canned soups and ready-made meals that are high in sodium.
Step 3
Cut down on the alcohol intake. Alcohol is already known for its damaging effects on the liver and brain, but it can also cause blood pressure to elevate. If you are going to drink, keep it to moderate levels.
Step 4
Stop smoking. Smoking can increase your chances of lung cancer and it can also increase your blood pressure. If you currently smoke, quit. If you do not smoke, then do not start.
Step 5
Reduce your intake of fat and calories. Avoid foods high in saturated and total fats and have your diet consist mainly of fruits, vegetables, low-fat dairy products and whole grains. Examples of foods to avoid include deep-fried foods, commercial baked goods, processed meats and foods prepared in cheese and butter.
Step 6
Start exercising. According to the Mayo Clinic, exercise can help lower your blood pressure levels and also keep your weight regulated. Aim for 30 minutes of exercise in a daily basis. Examples include weight training, running, swimming, biking, tennis, racquetball and stair climbing.
Step 7
Reduce your stress levels. Partake in some form of relaxation activity to help cope with daily problems. Examples include meditative breathing, yoga, Tai-chi, muscle relaxation and listening to music.
