Amitrip Side Effects

Depression, a mental health condition also called major depressive disorder, affects an estimated 14.8 million adults in the United States in a given year, according to the National Institute of Mental Health. Symptoms of depression, such as reduced interest in daily activities, despair or excessive fatigue, may be treated with a tricyclic antidepressant called amitriptyline. This medication helps elevate the levels of mood-balancing chemical in the brain. Patients should discuss amitriptyline side effects with a health professional prior to use.

Upset Stomach, Dry Mouth or Unpleasant Taste

Treatment with amitriptyline may cause upset stomach side effects, including nausea, vomiting or diminished appetite, in patients, according to Drugs.com. Certain patients may also experience bowel movement changes, such as constipation or diarrhea, which may cause stomach bloating or cramping. Additionally, patients may experience increased thirst or throat irritation due to dry mouth side effects. Immediately after taking this medication, patients may develop an unpleasant taste within their mouth, a temporary side effects that resolves shortly after treatment.

Blurred Vision, Dizziness or Headache

Blurred vision may occur as a side effect of amitriptyline, PDRhealth warns. Vision changes may induce dizziness or headache side effects in affected patients. Episodes of dizziness or head pain may make it difficult for patients to concentrate or remain focused during normal work, home or school related activities.

Drowsiness or Nightmares

Increased drowsiness or fatigue may occur in patients receiving treatment with this antidepressant, MedlinePlus reports. Certain patients may experience recurrent nightmares, which can disrupt a patient's ability to sleep and may exacerbate daytime fatigue side effects.

Breast Swelling and Reduced Sexual Libido

Amitriptyline may cause unusual swelling of a patient's breast tissue, Drugs.com reports. Breast swelling can affect both male and female patients and may cause the breast tissue to feel heavy, full or tender to the touch. Men taking amitriptyline may develop impotence, a side effect generally characterized by difficulty achieving or maintaining an erection during sexual activity. Women and men may also experience a decrease in their normal sexual libido or may have difficulty achieving orgasm. Patients who are bothered by these side effects should seek further care from a medical professional.

Mood Changes

Certain types of antidepressants, such as amitriptylin, may increase a patient's risk of experiencing suicidal thoughts or behaviors -- especially patients under the age of 24, MedlinePlus warns. Patients who exhibit any sudden or severe mood changes, such as restlessness, irritability or panic attacks, while taking this medication, should receive prompt care from a physician.
