A split nail may seem like a small problem in the grand scheme of things, but when your damaged nail constantly snags on fabrics or causes you pain, you may have trouble concentrating on anything else. Luckily, you can treat split nails by temporarily holding them together with the help of a coffee filter and hardening nail polish. Keep your nails clean and dry for the best way to prevent more split nails, recommends MayoClinic.com.

Step 1

Trim the nail as much as possible to get rid of the split. You can't physically fuse a broken nail back together; cutting away the damaged section is the only way to get rid of a split nail. If the split isn't severe, trimming the nail may completely remove the damaged portion. File uneven places on the nail. If a split portion remains, you need to cover it to protect your nail.

Step 2

Pour a small amount of nail polish remover on a cotton ball and use it to gently clean your damaged nail. Nails collect dirt and oil, which impede the longevity of nail polish. Your split nail treatment should last until you can completely remove the damaged section, so a clean nail is a must, according to "Redbook" magazine.

Step 3

Cut a small piece of coffee filter so it fits exactly over your damaged nail. Cover your nail with clear nail polish. Press the coffee filter into the polish. Apply clear nail polish over the filter to finish adhering it to your nail. Cover the coffee filter completely and let the polish dry.

Step 4

Add a coat of nail polish, if desired. Once dry, add a shiny, strengthening top coat to help harden and protect your nail.

Step 5

Soak your fingernail in nail polish remover once the split grows out. Remove and discard the coffee filter. Clip away the split. File your nail until it's smooth and redo your manicure.
