Magnesium is a mineral necessary for the normal function of just about every organ in the body, particularly the heart, muscles and kidneys. Magnesium is abundant in whole grains, nuts, legumes, bananas, chocolate, green vegetables and various herbs and spices. Though being truly deficient is rare, most Americans do not get as much magnesium as they should from their diets, according to the University of Maryland Medical Center article "Magnesium." There are numerous magnesium supplements available. Magnesium oxide provides more elemental magnesium than any other supplement.

Bodily Functions

Magnesium assists in energy production by means of the metabolism of carbohydrates and fats. Adenosine triphosphate, the energy-providing molecule for most metabolic processes, exists mainly as a complex with magnesium. Magnesium also assists with the synthesis of protein, carbohydrates and lipids, as well as the transport of ions -- such as potassium and calcium -- across cell membranes. In addition, magnesium is used for the makeup of teeth and bones, and regulates levels of copper, zinc, potassium, vitamin D and other nutrients.

Prevention and Assistance

Magnesium helps prevent certain medical conditions and helps medical treatments for various conditions work better. While oral magnesium oxide may not help people who already have asthma, getting the proper amount of magnesium can help prevent it. Oral magnesium supplements may also help prevent type 2 diabetes, hearing loss, migraine headaches and osteoporosis. Magnesium supplements may also shorten the duration of migraines and reduce symptoms of premenstrual syndrome.

Antacid and Laxative

Magnesium oxide is also used for its benefits as an antacid. Magnesium oxide can help relieve heartburn, sour stomach and acid indigestion. It can also be used as a laxative, especially if you need to quickly empty your bowels in certain instances, such as prior to an operation.

Tips and Warnings

Magnesium oxide may cause cramping, diarrhea, rash, hives, itching, dizziness, mood swings, fatigue, weakness, nausea or vomiting. Magnesium oxide should not be used for more than two weeks as an antacid or more than one week as a laxative without approval from your doctor. Certain people should not take magnesium supplements, so it would be wise to consult your doctor prior to consumption.
