Home Remedies for Severe Eczema

Eczema, also known as atopic dermatitis, is a skin disorder that usually accompanies asthma or hay fever. In some cases, eczema is a chronic condition starts in childhood and lasts through adulthood. For some, symptoms dissipate by adulthood. Actively treating asthma or allergies can prevent the onset of symptoms. If you are experiencing symptoms from eczema, and prefer a more natural method of treatment, there are things you can do at home.

Step 1

Avoid soaps, lotions or creams that have high concentrations of fragrance or other irritants, to reduce the occurrence of symptoms and lessen the severity of symptoms. Use hypoallergenic products whenever possible.

Step 2

Avoid scratching. Keep your nails trimmed or wear gloves to help resist the temptation. Wear cool, smooth-textured clothing to prevent irritating your skin.

Step 3

Take a warm bath with a sprinkling of baking soda or a colloidal oatmeal such, as Aveeno. These products are soothing to the skin and can help to relieve itchiness.

Step 4

Apply cool, wet compresses to the areas of your skin that become irritated or itchy. Place clean, dry towels in cold water. Squeeze out the excess water and place on your skin.

Step 5

Moisturize regularly and, if needed, apply an anti-itch cream or calamine lotion. Use an over-the-counter oral antihistamine such as diphenhydramine (Benadryl) or a 1 percent hydrocortisone cream.

Step 6

Use a humidifier in your home. Dry indoor air can cause skin dryness. Skin dryness can exacerbate eczema symptoms.
