Testosterone supplements exert effects on the body that either increase production of the hormone itself or stabilize hormonal balance by decreasing estrogen levels. However, not everyone can take testosterone boosters because altering your levels of one hormone, such as testosterone, causes a cascade of events and affects other hormones in the body. Even "safe" testosterone supplements may lead to increased hair loss, acne and other side effects due to fluctuating levels of other hormones including DHT or dihydrotestosterone. Always read the label thoroughly before beginning supplementation with any testosterone booster, and consult a doctor before taking any supplements for the first time. He's the one who should ultimately decide what is safe for you.
Longjack
Longjack comes from Malaysia, where natives have traditionally used the herb as a tonic for general health and male libido. According to "Natural Anabolics" by Jerry Brainum, longjack improves libido, increases testosterone levels and can improve strength and muscle gains with no apparent toxicity. Longjack also goes by the names eurycoma longifolia and tongkat ali. Take 400mg upon rising or before exercise, says Brianum.
Astaxanthin and Saw Palmetto
A carotenoid antioxidant in the family of beta carotene, astaxanthin has shown to boost testosterone levels when paired with a lipid extract of the saw palmetto berry. According to "Hormone Helpers" by Jose Antonio, Ph.D., a 2,000mg combination of the two ingredients can boost testosterone and lower estrogen levels.
Forskolin
Antonio also recommends forskolin, an extract of the herb coleus forskohlii. It can decrease body fat, increase bone mass and boost free testosterone levels. Forskolin activates an enzyme called adenylate cyclase, which plays a role in testosterone production, says Jim Stoppani, Ph.D., in "Supplements 101." Brainum notes that total testosterone may not rise, but when free testosterone increases the body can use more of its natural supply of the hormone. He recommends 250mg twice per day, containing no less than 10 percent forskolin per serving.
L-Carnitine
According to Stoppani, the amino acid L-carnitine activates testosterone receptors in muscle tissue. This proves particularly useful for athletes and strength trainees before and after intense physical exercise. While total testosterone remains the same, the amount of testosterone uptake and usage in muscle cells increases. In addition, L-carnitine supports male libido through its ability to boost NO, or nitric oxide, improving blood flow for better erections. Take 1g to 3g three times daily, preferably before and after workouts.
Tribulus Terrestris
The article "101 Best Muscle-Building Tips Ever" by Eric Velazquez recommends tribulus as a testosterone-booster and strength enhancer. Also known as puncturevine, tribulus increases testosterone production with saponins that prompt the brain's pituitary gland to release more LH or lutenizing hormone, says Stoppani. LH acts as a messenger, traveling to the testes and triggering the production of more testosterone. Take 250mg to 750mg twice per day, preferably upon waking, and 60 minutes before exercise.
