Dandruff, a mild form of seborrheic dermatitis, causes dead skin cells to shed from the scalp. Dandruff also causes itching and scaling on the scalp, and it may worsen in cooler months when the skin dries out more easily. In most cases, dandruff is a chronic condition, but you can control it by using an over-the-counter dandruff shampoo or alternative remedies. Consult a doctor if dandruff symptoms persist or worsen, however, as more intensive treatments may be necessary in severe cases.
Tea Tree Oil
Tea tree essential oil may help reduce dandruff in mild to moderate cases. A study published in 2002 in the "Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology" examined the effects of tea tree oil on dandruff sufferers. The patients were treated with 5 percent tea tree oil or a placebo daily for four weeks. At the end of the study, patients treated with tea tree oil experienced a 41 percent improvement in symptoms compared with 11 percent in the placebo group. Researchers noted that tea tree oil appears to be effective and well tolerated in the treatment of dandruff. To treat dandruff at home, dilute 10 drops of tea tree oil in 8 oz. of unscented shampoo. Wash your hair with the solution daily until symptoms subside.
Aloe Vera
Herbalists often use aloe vera to treat minor skin irritations and inflammatory conditions, and it may also provide some relief from dandruff. A study published in 1999 in the "Journal of Dermatological Treatment" evaluated the effect of an aloe vera extract emulsion on patients with seborrheic dermatitis. The study found that improvement rates were much higher in individuals treated with aloe vera than those treated with a placebo. Fresh aloe vera gel may have a similar effect when used consistently at home. Apply the fresh gel directly to your scalp at least once daily, leave on for about 30 minutes and rinse. Adding aloe vera gel to your shampoo may also help reduce symptoms.
Rosemary Essential Oil
Rosemary essential oil increases circulation to the scalp, promotes blood flow to the affected area and helps reduce flaking caused by dandruff, according to Bill Gottlieb in "Alternative Cures: More Than 1,000 of the Most Effective Natural Home Remedies." Dilute 2 to 3 drops of rosemary essential oil in 1 tbsp. carrier oil, and massage the mixture into your scalp for 1 to 2 minutes at night before bed. Use a rich, fatty carrier oil such as avocado or almond for the best results. Wash and condition your hair as usual in the morning, and repeat the treatment every night until dandruff disappears.
Apple Cider Vinegar
Apple cider vinegar kills a variety of fungi and bacteria on contact, and it may help get rid of dandruff naturally, according to the Reader's Digest Association in "1,801 Home Remedies: Trustworthy Treatments for Everyday Health Problems." Mix one part water with one part apple cider vinegar, and pour over your hair as a final rinse after shampooing for the best results. Add 2 to 3 drops of tea tree oil or rosemary essential oil to every 1 cup of the apple cider vinegar mixture for added healing power.
