Atlantic City, New Jersey, is so much more than gambling in glittering casinos. It is a historic seaside resort town filled with opportunities to enjoy the outdoors and get active. The sands of the beaches, the waves of the Atlantic, the planks of the Boardwalk and the greens of local fairways are all great ways to see the best of Atlantic City.

Jet Ski Rentals

Casino City Jet Ski is the only place in Atlantic City to rent Jet Skis. Find the rental spot on the Mississippi Avenue beach behind the Convention Center. The shop is only open during summer months because of tourist demand. By renting one of these watercraft, you can venture out into the Atlantic Ocean to ride the waves. And because you control the speed, it's a great daytime activity for thrill-seekers and water enthusiasts alike.

Boardwalk Fun

The Boardwalk is one of Atlantic City's biggest attractions--and a great place for a walk. Stretching along wide, sandy beaches, the Boardwalk offers an array of eateries, shops and activities from the inexpensive to the upscale. Lit-up casinos line the way, serving as your backdrop. Sign up for a walking tour of the Boardwalk, or simply stroll the stretch yourself--it's four miles long, end to end. Go early in the morning to avoid heavy pedestrian traffic. Make an afternoon of it by stopping to play arcade games, grabbing a bite to eat or simply watching the waves.

Serious Shopping

Atlantic City has two major shopping meccas: The Pier Shops at Caesars and The Walk. The Walk is an outlet shopping complex featuring stores such as J.Crew, Lacoste and BCBG Max Azria. Great deals and big bargains are pretty much a guarantee, as well as styles you won't find in standard retail stores. Along the Boardwalk, adjacent to Caesars Hotel and Casino, is the The Pier Shops, a shopping and dining area. Boutiques such as Gucci, Louis Vuitton, Burberry and Tiffany & Co. are located inside The Pier. Eateries such as Buddakan and The Continental encompass the third floor and offer sweeping ocean views. To squeeze in some exercise while you're window shopping, wear your sneakers and turn your excursion into a power walk. Both complexes offer wide-open spaces for you to get in some cardio.

Eighteen Holes

Atlantic City Country Club is a great place to tee off at a professional-grade golf course. The public course features marshy and saltwater inlets and challenging holes. In 2008, the course was rated one of the Top 100 Courses by "Golf" magazine. The course has also been named one the Top 10 Golf Courses in the Philadelphia area by "Philadelphia" magazine, and was rated the No. 1 public golf course in New Jersey by "Golf Weekly." Hotel-and-golf packages at Caesar's, Bally's and Showboat start at $90--all three hotels are owned by the same parent company.

Lighthouse Tour

Get your heart pumping with a climb to the top of Absecon Lighthouse. This structure, on the National Register of Historic Places, is the tallest lighthouse in New Jersey, measuring 171 feet. It takes no less than 220 steps to reach the top of this landmark, used to guide sailors home from sea since the 1800s. A great cardio workout awaits in ascending the steps and can be complemented with a hike on the surrounding beach.
