According to Kinda Lenberg and the American Volleyball Coaches Association, authors of "Volleyball Skills and Drills," drills are an essential component of practicing volleyball because they help players learn new skills and improve their game. A few well-chosen volleyball drills will help players master the basics of the game and will help prepare them to do their best during competition.

Serve Ladder

The Serve Ladder Drill will help players improve their ability to serve the volleyball as well as improve the accuracy of their serves, reports Lenberg and the American Volleyball Coaches Association. Begin by choosing one player to stand on each side of the net. Arrange the remaining players on the sidelines to rotate in as their turn comes. Have several volleyballs on hand so each player can move very quickly. The first player serves the volleyball 50 times. The first 25 serves are down the line and the second 25 should be cross-court serves. When the first player has served all 50 times, the player on the opposite side of the net takes her spot, and the first person on the sidelines goes to the other side of the net. The drill continues until each player has served 50 times.

Cone Drill

According to Al Scates, Mike Linn and Vince Kowalick, authors of "Complete Conditioning for Volleyball," the Cone Drill teaches players to change directions quickly to prevent the ball from touching the floor. Set up one cone in the middle of the volleyball court, and then place eight cones around the center cone to create a circle with a diameter of 30 feet. Have the first player stand next to one of the outside cones, run quickly to the center to touch the inside cone and then run to the next outside cone. Each player will complete the drill eight times to touch each outside cone one time.

Blocking Moves

The Blocking Moves Drill teaches players how to block effectively, note Scates, Linn and Kowalick. You will need two chairs set up 10 feet apart on one side of the net. Choose two players to go first and have them each stand on one of the chairs. Each player will receive a volleyball to hold over the top of the net. Have several more volleyballs within easy reach. The remaining players scatter on the opposite side of the net and get into blocking position. The two players standing on chairs send the balls over the net, and the players on the court must move back and forth across the court, blocking each of the balls. Complete this drill 12 to 20 times, and make sure to rotate players so everyone has a chance to practice blocking.
