Warmup Basketball Drills for Games

Warming up is a common part of any basketball game. In organized basketball, a warmup period allows players time to get their muscles ready, temper their nerves, get used to the playing environment and develop a rhythm for shooting the basketball. Usually a team has half the court for warmup exercises.

Four-Corners Drill

This drill emphasizes floor movement, passing and dribble-drives. Begin by placing four players at four corners of the court. Assign numbers to these players; the left baseline player is 3, the left three-point position is 1, the right three-point position is 4, and the right baseline position is 2. Under the hoop, create a line of players and number them from front to back, with the first player in line being number 5. The object of the drill is to pass the ball in a series according to the numbers and to finish with a layup when all players have been involved. Unless you are the last person to touch the ball, you should run to take the spot of the person you pass to. Player 5 passes to player 1 and takes his spot as player 1 passes to player 2 and runs for that spot. This goes on until player 4 gets the ball; he goes in for a layup and then moves to the back of the line. The next player in line grabs the rebound, passes out to player 5 and continues the drill.

Jog and Pass Drill

This simple drill helps elevate your heart rate and practice passing. Create two lines of players situated across each other with 20 to 25 feet in between. Give the ball to the first person in the line on the right side. That player then passes to the first player on the left-side line and runs across to join the back of the left line. The ball-handler on the left side then passes to the new person at the front of the right side of the line and runs to join the back of that line, and so on. Do this drill as rapidly as possible to keep heart rates elevated.

Two-Line Layups

Create two lines of players, and position each about 5 feet from the top of the key on either side of the court. Give the basketball to the first person in the line on the right side. The ball handler then dribbles to the hoop and goes in for a layup. A player from the left side runs in to collect the rebound, then passes back to the next person in line on the right side. Both players then join the back of the lines opposite from where they started. This continues until every player has scored and rebounded at least once.
