Low sperm count, or oligospermia, is a health condition in which the semen you ejaculate upon orgasm contains fewer than 20 million sperm per milliliter of the excreted fluid, says the Mayo Clinic website. Although some men with a low count can still produce children, low sperm count is a contributing factor in the inability to fertilize a woman’s egg. You can help increase your low sperm count, however, by initiating herbal treatment, the Mayo Clinic says. Always talk to a doctor before taking herbs for any condition.

Causes of Low Sperm Count

Low sperm count can be the result of multiple health issues. Low counts can be cause by any problem in the production and secretion of sperm, such as problems in the testicles, where sperm are produced, the hypothalamus and pituitary glands, organs responsible for producing hormones that initiate sperm production. Problems with sperm count can also come from medical issues, such as sexually transmitted diseases, lack of ejaculation, hormone imbalances and certain medications. Environmental, diet and lifestyle choices are also possible culprits. This is why the exact cause of your low sperm count is rarely ever identified, says the Mayo Clinic site.

Symptoms of Low Sperm Count

Often, there are no symptoms of low sperm count except for the inability to produce a child. However, certain medical conditions or hormonal imbalances can cause you to experience symptoms of a low count. These can include pain, swelling or lumps in the testicle region, inability to achieve an erection, low sex drive and loss or reduction in the growth of facial hair, says the site, according to the Mayo Clinic.

Herbal Treatments

Ingesting one-fourth to one teaspoon of liquid black cohosh extract three times daily can help with low sperm count. Using the same regimen with astragalus extract is also beneficial for those with low counts. In addition, try ingesting 1 to 2 milliliters of saw palmetto extract three times daily. You can also take saw palmetto in tablet form; take one to three of these a day, according to the Baby Zone website.

Warning

Herbal remedies don’t usually have side effects if taken properly, says the Urology channel site. However, even when taken appropriately, herbal treatments can cause headaches or stomach pain as a result of added ingredients in the herb’s production, such as synthetic additives, says the site. Herbs can also interact with certain medications you are taking. In addition, overdose can lead to illness and even death. For these reasons, speak with your health-care professional if you experience any abnormal pain during treatment.

Considerations

Because diet and lifestyle affect sperm count, increasing your intake of healthier food and drink or altering your lifestyle choices, such as stopping smoking, may provide treatment. In addition, although you have a low sperm count you may still be able to produce children. Thus, be sure to consult your health care physician before initiating herbal treatment to determine if herbal treatment is required.
