According to Mary Lou and Robert J. Heiss, authors of "The Story of Tea: A Cultural History and Drinking Guide," black tea has healing properties that can help you improve and maintain your health. Black tea also has the ability to ward off certain illnesses, making it a healthy and beneficial beverage choice.

Eliminates Free Radicals

Free radicals damage the healthy cells in your body, which can lead to a variety of illnesses, reports Mark Ukra, author of "The Ultimate Tea Diet: Burn Fat and Lose Pounds Fast and Forever." Eating unhealthy foods can increase the number of free radicals in your body, but black tea appears to help undo some of the damage. The compounds in black tea eliminate the free radicals before they have the chance to cause illness or disease. Ukra recommends drinking at least three cups of black tea each day to help you maintain good health as well as ward off diseases, such as Alzheimer's and heart disease.

Boosts The Immune System

The compounds in black tea help reduce the inflammation in your body so you are better able to fight off colds, and flu. Without a strong immune system, the body cannot fight the bacteria and viruses that can cause illness. Drinking three to four cups of black tea each day can help combat inflammation and eliminate harmful pathogens so you are able to achieve and maintain good health.

Helps Keep You Cancer-Free

According to Ukra, the polyphenols in black tea can help prevent a wide variety of cancers, including breast, ovarian, lung and prostate cancer. One way that black tea is able to prevent cancer is by inhibiting the formation and growth of malignant tumors. Black tea may also stop the spread of certain cancer cells so that the disease can be treated more successfully. The compounds in black tea may also work by targeting dangerous carcinogens and destroying them before they can cause cancer cells to begin growing.

Lowers Cholesterol

According to Jonny Bowden, author of "The 150 Healthiest Foods on Earth," black tea can help lower your level of triglycerides. Black tea can reduce your LDL or bad cholesterol as well as your total cholesterol score, which may reduce your risk of heart disease. Consuming several cups of black tea each day may also improve the function of your arteries so cholesterol cannot build up inside of them as easily.
