Snickers candy bars have been a favorite snack or dessert since they were introduced in 1930 and are now the most popular candy bars in the world. Snickers is a chocolate candy with a caramel, nougat and nut center that has become a mainstay of Mars Inc., raking in more than $2 billion a year for the confectioner.

History

The Snickers bar was invented by Frank Mars when he dipped an existing caramel, nougat and nut snack in chocolate. In 1949, the candy bar gained notoriety by sponsoring the record-breaking kids show "Howdy Doody." In 1984, Snickers again took the spotlight after becoming the official snack food sponsor of the Olympic Games in Los Angeles. In 1991, frozen Snickers bars were included in soldier's Thanksgiving meals, and in 1994 and 1996, Snickers was the official sponsor of the Soccer World Cup and the Euro Tournament. Snickers celebrated its 75th anniversary in 2005.

Varieties of Snickers Bars

Today, Snickers bars exist in their original form, as a Two to Go pack, and in a fun size, or miniature. There are also Snickers Fudge bars, Snickers Dark and Snickers Almond. The Snickers Almond is also available as a Two to Go pack and in miniature size. There also are Snickers Ice Cream Bars, Snickers Mini Ice Cream Bars, Snickers Ice Cream Cones and Snickers Ice Cream Brownies.

Ingredients

A Snickers bar is made of milk chocolate, corn syrup, peanuts, sugar, skim milk, butter, milk fat, hydrogenated soy bean oil, lactose, salt, egg whites and artificial flavor. The milk chocolate is made of sugar, cocoa butter, chocolate, lactose, skim milk, milk fat, soy lecithin and artificial flavor.

Nutrition Information for Snickers Fun Size Bar

One serving of a Snickers Fun Size bar is one individually wrapped bar. Each serving has 72 calories; 3.7 g of fat, or 6 percent of the daily value; 2 mg of cholesterol, or 1 percent DV; 35 mg of sodium, or 1 percent DV; 40 mg of potassium, or 1 percent DV; 9 g of carbohydrates, or 3 percent DV; and 1.2 g of protein, or 2 percent DV.

Vitamins and Minerals in Snickers Fun Size Bar

Each serving of a Snickers Fun Size bar contains 1 percent DV of calcium, 1 percent DV of iron, 1 percent DV of riboflavin or vitamin B2, and 2 percent DV of niacin or vitamin B3. The bars have no vitamin A or C.
