The size of your pores is determined largely by your genetic makeup as well as your age. As you get older, your pores often appear larger. However, you can minimize the appearance of large pores. In addition, you can prevent your pores from enlarging. Working with a dermatologist, try some more advanced treatments that may help shrink your pore size or at least give your skin a cleaner, smoother appearance.
Step 1
Cleanse your face daily. Pores that contain trapped oils can expand. Use a cleanser formulated for your skin type to avoid exacerbating acne-prone skin or drying out sensitive skin.
Step 2
Exfoliate to remove dead skin cells. Dead skin cells further block your pores, making them appear larger.
Step 3
Ask your doctor for a retinoid. Retinoids are prescription-strength creams that unclog pores and stimulate new collagen production. Collagen helps plump your skin, making it appear younger.
Step 4
Get a chemical peel. Using the skills and knowledge of a board-certified dermatologist, apply an acid-based peel to your skin. While peels can't shrink pores altogether, according to the American Academy of Dermatology, they can improve the appearance of pores.
Step 5
Get laser treatment or dermabrasion from your dermatologist. New acne treatments, which may be the result of large or inflamed pores, suggest that both red and blue light acne treatments on their own, dermabrasion, or a combination helps unclog pores and significantly improve skin's appearance.
