Candida is a yeast-like fungus that occurs naturally in the body. While normal amounts of candida seldom cause problems, candida overgrowth can cause an infection called candidiasis. Candidiasis, also called a yeast infection or simply candida, is often managed with ointments, medications, improved hygiene and dietary changes. According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, candida diets generally restrict yeast, sugar, processed foods and, in some cases, dairy. Numerous healthy foods may prevent or reduce candida overgrowth.

Unrefined Grains

Unrefined grains are whole grains that have not been altered from their original form. As a result, they contain more vitamins, minerals and fiber than processed grains, such as flour and instant rice. Women's health expert and author of "Women's Bodies, Women's Wisdom: Creating Physical and Emotional Health and Healing," Dr. Christiane Northrup suggests replacing processed grains with unrefined grains as a useful dietary tool for managing candida and preventing recurrent yeast infections. Examples of unrefined grains include steel cut oats, barley, cracked wheat, whole wheat, quinoa, popcorn, millet, wild rice and brown rice. Consume a variety of unrefined grains regularly for broadest nutritional benefits.

Yogurt and Kefir

Yogurt and kefir are cultured dairy products that contain probiotics -- healthy bacteria known to enhance digestion and prevent bacterial infections. Northrup suggests probiotics as a way to eliminate candida in the body and restore balance in your digestive system. For best results, select low-fat yogurt that contains live active cultures. Since yogurt and kefir provide various types and amounts of probiotics, check food packaging for specific content information. Two helpful strains of probiotics, according to Northrup, include acidophilus and bifida factor.

Fish, Nuts and Seeds

Fish, nuts and seeds contain healthy fats, known as essential fatty acids -- healthy fats you must obtain from dietary sources. The University of Maryland Medical Center suggests limiting red meat and saturated fats and increasing omega-3 fatty acids and omega-6 fatty acids for improved wellness and reduced candidiasis symptoms. Foods rich in omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids include herring, salmon, sardines, halibut, trout, tuna, walnuts, flaxseed, pine nuts, pecans and brazil nuts. Consume a variety of fish, nuts and seeds regularly for best potential results.

Anti-fungal Foods and Spices

Garlic and a variety of spices are considered anti-fungal, meaning they can help prevent or reduce overgrowth of fungus, such as candida. To reap benefits of anti-fungal foods, season your food with garlic and anti-fungal spices, which include cinnamon, oregano, sage and cloves. Anti-fungal spices can also be enjoyed as teas.
