Wrightsville Beach is a small community located just minutes east of Wilmington in New Hanover County, North Carolina. Though small, the town offers its residents and visitors a multitude of healthy and recreational activities to stay in shape both in the summer and the off-season. Popular activities include surfing, fishing and kayaking or canoeing.
Surfing
Wrightsville Beach claims some of the best surfing on the east coast. Whether you are new to the sport or an experienced surfer, you will find no shortage of surfing opportunities. There are several surf shops in town that not only provide surfing equipment but also lessons. For example, the Carolina School of Surf offers both private and group surfing lessons, while the Crystal South Surf Camp provides lessons for kids, teens and adults.
Fishing
Wrightsville Beach and the nearby community of Wilmington offer several opportunities for you to test your angling skills. There are several fishing boats and charters available for anything from fly-fishing to hooking a marlin. Fishing the creeks and near the shore, you can expect to hook some red drum, flounder, trout, cobia and tarpon. Or try your luck from Johnnie Mercer's fishing pier. Surf fishing is particularly rewarding in the spring and fall.
Canoeing/Kayaking
If you want to go canoeing or kayaking, Wrightsville Beach and nearby Wilmington have rental shops where you can choose from a number of kayaks, fishing kayaks, stand-up paddle boards and canoes. Try out the new five-mile kayaking trail winding throughout island marshes.
Tennis
Wrightsville Beach Park has four public hard-surface tennis courts. If you want to improve your game, lessons are offered at varying times throughout the week. You can take one-on-one private lessons or join up with several others for a group lesson. As of September 2010, the cost for Wrightsville Beach residents is $55 and $70 for nonresidents.
Fitness Classes
Wrightsville Beach offers several ways to stay in shape all year long. The parks and recreation department offers a variety of group fitness classes suitable for all ability levels. You can take Pilates, where you can learn to strengthen your core muscles by mastering proper body alignment with an emphasis on flexibility, balance and endurance. Other classes offered include low-impact aerobics, yoga, power yoga and tone and stretch.
