Early Signs of a Heart Attack

Though many people may believe that a heart attack is a condition that comes on suddenly, it is actually one that occurs slowly, with many of the symptoms being subtle. They are so subtle in fact, that many sufferers wait until the last minute to seek medical attention; this can result in serious complications, including death. Knowing the signs of a heart attack can save your life and even if you believe the symptoms are related to another condition, make haste and receive medical attention immediately.

Chest Discomfort

Chest pain or discomfort is generally felt in the center of your chest, and may come in the form of pain, an uncomfortable pressure, a squeezing sensation or an uncomfortable feeling of fullness. This feeling may last for minutes at a time, or leave and return later.

Pain or Discomfort Elsewhere

The uncomfortable feeling you may feel in your chest can also spread to other areas of your body. This includes one or both of your arms, your jaw, neck and stomach. Too often, the symptoms of a heart attack get confused with indigestion. This is one of the many reasons people wait too long to seek medical care.

Various Symptoms

Other symptoms commonly associated with a heart attack include shortness of breath that may or may not be accompanied by chest discomfort, nausea, breaking into a cold sweat and a feeling of being lightheaded.

Men and Women

According to the American Heart Association, the most common symptom for both men and women is chest pain or discomfort. However women are a bit more likely to experience other symptoms such as arm numbness, shortness of breath and back or neck pain.
