Exercising on an elliptical machine won't instantly flatten your abs; however, the calorie-burning boost will help you lose weight, resulting in reduced body fat all over. Spot reduction doesn't exist no matter what equipment you use, so losing total body fat is the most effective way to shrink your waistline. And according to the American Council on Exercise, cardio activities such as using the elliptical machine are the most effective exercises for this goal.

How It Works

In a typical 60-minute elliptical training session, a 155-pound person burns 670 calories. One pound of body fat equals about 3,500 calories, so you could theoretically lose 1 pound in about five workouts. However, you'll only create a calorie deficit if you limit your food intake as well. Trade sugary and high-fat fare for nutrient-dense foods such as fruits and vegetables, whole-wheat products, oatmeal, egg whites, soybeans and seafood. These filling options will keep you satisfied, helping you reduce calories without having to count.
