You need nutrients to function, and you get those nutrients mainly from the foods you eat. Foods provide the raw materials for energy, growth and repair of tissues. The nutrients you need every day include proteins, carbohydrates, fats, vitamins, minerals and water. Proper nutrition makes it easier for you to control your weight and manage your health.

The Basics

There are a few keys to eating healthy. First, eat a variety of foods, including vegetables, fruits and whole-grain products. Fruits and vegetables contain many of the vitamins and minerals your body needs. You also should eat lean meats, poultry, fish and low-fat dairy products. Drink plenty of water, and avoid toxins such as excessive alcohol, saturated fat and trans fat.

USDA Recommendations

The U.S. Department of Agriculture, or USDA, has established a food pyramid that lets you determine how much you should eat from each of the major food groups: grains, fruits, vegetables, milk, and meat and beans. You also should limit your intake of saturated and transfats, cholesterol, added sugars, salt and alcohol.

Tips from the Harvard School of Public Health

According to the Harvard School of Public Health, there are five easy steps to healthy eating: Start with regular exercise; focus on foods rather than calories or grams; eat plants foods like fruits and vegetables; avoid American staples such as red meat, potatoes and sugary food and drink; and take a multivitamin.

Tips from the American Academy of Family Physicians

According to the American Academy of Family Physicians, you can improve your nutrition by regularly eating foods rich in vitamins and minerals, such as fruits, vegetables, whole grains and low- or nonfat dairy. You should talk with your doctor if you are overweight or have a condition such as hypertension, high cholesterol, cancer or diabetes, because a change in nutrition can help you with these conditions.

Adding Exercise

By adding exercise to a healthy and nutritious diet, you can better manage your weight and improve the health of your heart and circulatory systems, your bones and your joints. You also can improve your overall state of mind, which can help you get more out of life.
