Snorkeling is an activity enjoyed by many people as a way to explore the world beneath the surface of the water. Schools of fish, coral reefs and vegetation are just some of the things you may see when you snorkel. Using a kayak to venture out on your snorkeling trip is a good way to combine two exciting pursuits into one. Snorkeling from a kayak can be challenging but is also a lot of fun.

Preparing and Getting Into the Water

Step 1

Pack up all of the equipment you want to take along. Include your snorkel, mask, fins, a towel and any cameras or other accessories you may want.

Step 2

Secure everything you are bringing to tethers or bungee cords so the items don't end up falling out and floating away. Include your paddle in that list.

Step 3

Paddle out to the spot where you want to snorkel, ideally near a reef or other site with much to look at. Anchor your kayak so it stays in place, or secure a tether to your body to tow it behind you as you snorkel.

Step 4

Pull your flippers on your feet inside the kayak, then lift your body up out of the cockpit, and straddle the kayak.

Step 5

Place your mask over your eyes, grab your snorkel and slowly swing one leg over to slide yourself into the water.

Getting Back Into the Kayak

Step 1

Swim up to the side of the kayak and reach over to the far side of the cockpit with one hand, and the near side with the other.

Step 2

Pull yourself up toward the cockpit, allowing the kayak to tilt toward you slightly. Flutter kick with your flippers to help get up and into the cockpit.

Step 3

Shimmy your body up so your hips and stomach are across the cockpit. Turn yourself over, so your buttocks are in the seat and you are sideways in the kayak.

Step 4

Remove your flippers and swing your feet into the cockpit to sit straight. Pull up your anchor, or release yourself from the tether, grab your paddle and you are ready to go.
