Poppy seeds are tiny seeds harvested from poppy flowers. Native to the Middle East, poppy flowers have been traditionally grown and used for their narcotic properties, including the ability to induce sleep. However, poppy plants grown in the U.S. are generally non-narcotic. Chefs use poppy seeds in a variety of culinary preparations, such as baking, to add a crunchy, nutty texture to foods.

Mineral Content

Tiny poppy seeds have a surprising amount of beneficial nutrients. Each tablespoon of poppy seeds contains 13 percent of the recommended daily allowance of calcium. A tablespoon of poppy seeds also contains 29 percent of the recommended daily allowance of manganese. Other nutrients, such as magnesium, copper and phosphorus are also found in tiny poppy seeds.

Health Benefits

The calcium found in poppy seeds has many health benefits, such as helping your body develop strong bones and teeth. Calcium is also helpful in promoting the health of your cardiovascular, muscular and nervous systems, according to the University of Maryland Medical Center. The manganese in poppy seeds is a trace mineral that is beneficial in fighting osteoporosis, arthritis and diabetes, among other conditions.

Fiber Content

Poppy seeds pack a good amount of dietary fiber despite their tiny size. In 8 g of poppy seeds, you'll get 2 g of dietary fiber, or 7 percent of your recommended daily allowance of fiber. Dietary fiber is essential in facilitating healthy bowel movements. Eating a diet rich in dietary fiber can also reduce your cholesterol levels and prevent type 2 diabetes.

Traditional Medical Uses

Historically, poppy seeds were used for medicinal purposes, according to the Epicentre. While Eastern poppy has been used as a narcotic, syrup made from the Western poppy has been used as a cough syrup. An infusion made from poppy seeds has also been used traditionally to treat toothache pain.

Allergy Considerations

Poppy seeds can cause allergic reactions in individuals with sensitivities. If you experience allergic symptoms after eating poppy seeds, visit your doctor for allergy testing. Signs of a poppy seed allergy include skin redness, hives, swollen eyes and shortness of breath.
