If you're afraid to wear black out of fear that telltale flakes will fall on your shoulders, dandruff may be a problem. Dandruff may be caused by dry skin, a yeast-like fungus called malassezia, psoriasis, eczema or seborrheic dermatitis. If your doctor approves, use home remedies to treat your condition.

Shampoo More

Infrequent shampooing may be causing dead skin cells to accumulate on the scalp, which can flake off during the day. Shampoo your hair every day to exfoliate your scalp and remove and rinse away dead skin cells. Dandruff is easier to control the more often you shampoo your hair, according to Dr. Patricia Farris in the book, "The Doctors Book of Home Remedies." Rub your scalp vigorously with your fingertips to help reduce the buildup of dead skin cells on the scalp.

Sunlight

Exposing your scalp to sunlight, in moderation, may help reduce dandruff, according to MayoClinic.com. Do not sunbathe or expose your scalp to prolonged sunlight, and do not go out in the sun without using sunscreen to protect your skin. Instead, sit in the sun for a few minutes to reduce the severity of your dandruff, if it's OK with your doctor. Prolonged sun exposure will increase your likelihood of developing skin cancer.

Olive Oil and Ginger

A solution of olive oil and ginger may help reduce flaky dandruff. Slice several thin pieces of ginger root, which is available in the produce section at the grocery store. Dice the slices into small pieces, then add them to 1/4 cup olive oil. Apply the mixture directly to the hair and massage it into the scalp with your fingertips. Leave the mixture on your scalp for 15 minutes, then take a shower. Shampoo your hair and rinse to remove the treatment.
