Hoodia, also known as hoodia gordonii, is extracted from a South African plant and is supposed to have been used by natives to control hunger. The Mayo Clinic notes that hoodia is purported to have appetite control and weight-loss benefits, but explains that scientific evidence does not support these claims. However, other ingredients in hoodia supplements may assist in weight loss. Before using any dietary supplements, you should carefully review ingredients and consult a doctor.
SlimQuick Hoodia
SlimQuick Hoodia is one of a number of weight management supplements manufactured by the company SlimQuick. According to the company, this product is specifically designed for women and is the only supplement that combines hoodia with green tea, vitamin D3 and calcium. SlimQuick notes that SlimQuick Hoodia contains 550 mg of hoodia extract, but does not provide any scientific evidence for its supposed benefits.
Irwin Naturals Hoodia Action
Irwin Naturals Hoodia Action offers a number of ingredients other than hoodia in its formula, including green tea extract, ginger extract, choline, inositol and conjugated linoleic acid. Conjuaged linoleic acid, commonly abbreviated CLA, is a fatty acid that is purported to have weight-loss benefits. According to a study published in the October 2007 issue of the "Journal of Food Science," CLA supplementation may reduce body fat. However, this research was performed in animals and you may not experience the same results.
Kaizen Herbalean FX
Hoodia is just one of many ingredients in Kaizen's Herbalean FX, as the supplement contains a number of stimulants and herbal extracts intended to increase energy levels and support weight loss. Kaizen Herbalean FX contains green tea extract, caffeine, tyramine, tyrosine and hordenine, among other ingredients. According to the fitness and nutrition website Muscle & Strength, hordenine has a variety of weight-loss benefits. The website explains hordenine may slow down the rate of digestion, which can keep you feeling full, and may also encourage the release of norepinephrine, a hormone that prompts your body to burn fat.
Pro-Rx Labs T2
Pro-Rx Labs T2 is another supplement with a number of ingredients in addition to hoodia. This supplement is a stimulant-free blend, with no ephedra or caffeine. However, it does contain other potentially beneficial ingredients such as tyrosine, guggulsterones, synephrine and yohimbine. Although yohimbine is commonly claimed to be beneficial for fat loss, a study from the September 1991 issue of the "International Journal of Obesity" found that yohimbine does not influence fat distribution.
