The Province of La Spezia, located in the Liguria region of northern Italy, is situated on the sandy shores of the Mediterranean Sea. This region of the French Riviera is known for mild summer temperatures, averaging between 65 and 85 degrees F. Winter travelers can expect temperatures between 35 and 50 degrees F., with little to no snowfall, even in the coldest months. The temperate climate and scenic environment make this area of Italy an ideal, year-round vacation destination.

History

Explore the history of the La Spezia Province through architecture. La Spezia is home to many ancient structures, some dating back to the Roman and pre-Roman time periods. From the many cathedrals that dot the countryside, including the Church of San Venerio Marinasco and the Church of Santa Lucia, to the stone fortresses of Coderone and St. George castles, the richness of La Spezia's historical heritage can be explored by visiting the region's diverse array of ancient architectural structures.

Geography

An intricate system of walking paths and trails winds throughout La Spezia, adjoining this province with the surrounding towns and villages. Hiking the Campligia Ridges provides exceptional views of the regions stony cliffs and sandy shorelines. Explore the Woods of Val di Vara, a shady forest area that provides a peaceful escape from the more crowded tourist areas. Enjoy picturesque scenery in the Hills del Golfo and one-of-a-kind views at the sea of Cenque Terre. The miles of trails that intertwine this region are easily accessible from many points in the La Spezia province. While there is a fee to travel upon some of the more popular walking routes, many of the smaller trails are free to explore.

La Spezia's downtown harbor area features a walking pier that provides up-close views of the many seafaring vessels as they enter and exit the inner harbor area. Explore the many lighthouses scattered along this area, the oldest dates back to 1840. Visitors may also enjoy a visit to the naval museum, "Museo Tecnico Navale." Other museums in La Spezia include the Museo del Castello, displaying artifacts from Roman and pre-Roman times, the Museo del Sigillo, which houses what is said to be the largest collection of seals in the world, and the Museo Civico Amadeo Lia, an art museum featuring the works of Titian and Bellini.

Time Frame

La Spezia is home to many cultural events throughout the calender year. The "Triangle of Tastes -- Farm in the City" is a food festival that occurs annually, during the last week of November. December visitors to La Spezia will enjoy a variety of Christmas celebrations, culminating with a New Year's Eve toast and Music Festival in the provinces historic center.

The most widely known festival in the Ligurai region is La Spezia's annual St. Joseph's Day Celebration. This yearly event draws thousands of visitors from around the world. Featuring craftsmen and artisans from all around Italy, this three-day-long festival is held in late March. Honoring La Spezia's patron, Saint Joseph, the town fair and art festival was first conceived in 1653, and has been a tradition in La Spezia for more than 350 hundred years.

Considerations

La Spezia has many forms of public transportation including bus, ferry, train and the many widely used walking trails. Visitors to this area will find conveniently located bus depots scattered throughout the province. Public ferries run from the harbor region and offer travel to and from the various islands that dot the region. Lodging in the form of hotels, hostels, bed and breakfasts, and small boarding houses are also common throughout the region. Visitors will also find many restaurants in the La Spezia province, each featuring it's own unique variety of Italian cuisine. Look for fresh seafood as well as homemade pasta and pesto. The regions many vineyards provide a wealth of locally produced wines and Italian liquors as well.
