Dark spots are common on the skin; however, their commonality doesn't make them any easier to deal with. In fact, dark spots located anywhere on your body can make you want to cover up. Dark spots, or age spots, as they're sometimes called, result when too much melanin or pigment is produced in the skin following extensive sun exposure. Some spots fade away on their own, but most require treatment to lighten them.
Step 1
Wash your skin thoroughly twice a day. Use a gentle cleanser to remove dirt, oil and dead skin cells. Rinse the skin well and pat it dry with a clean towel.
Step 2
Apply lemon juice to your dark spots. Squeeze the juice from a lemon and dab a bit of it onto your dark spots. Wait for the juice to dry on your skin before rinsing it off with warm water. The citric acid in the lemon juice will lighten the pigmentation in the dark spots over time, according to the American Chronicle.
Step 3
Visit your dermatologist's office and ask for a prescription for hydroquinone. This cream bleaches pigment from the skin, so when it is applied to your dark spots, they should lighten after a few months of application. Dab a small amount onto your dark spots after cleansing. Be careful to avoid applying the cream to any other parts of your skin, as it can affect the pigmentation of normal skin as well.
Step 4
Schedule an appointment for dermabrasion. Once your skin is cleansed and numbed, your dermatologist will sand off the top layer of skin. Healing will be painful and your skin will be red, irritated and may scab over. However, once the skin heals, your dark spots will appear considerably lighter.
