Body hair serves multiple purposes on the body. It is used for insulation, it absorbs rays from the sun, it acts as protection and it repels water. Hair on the arms can sprout up in small patches or it can cover a wide surface area. Thick and dense hair is called terminal and lighter, finer hair is known as vellus. If you feel self conscious with the covering of hair on your arms, choose from a number of hair removal options.

Step 1

Schedule an appointment with a board certified dermatologist to get laser hair removal. In this procedure, a beam of light is passed down onto your skin where it zeros in on the hair follicles and damages the hair, causing it to fall out. Laser hair removal is most effective if you have light skin and dark hair according to the Mayo Clinic's website.

Step 2

Warm your arm hair with a heated washcloth to soften it up and then use a depilatory cream to dissolve it. Apply a liberal amount of cream over your hair and let it set up for five to 15 minutes. The set-up time varies depending on what brand you use. Take out a damp washcloth and place it against your skin. Push down with moderate pressure and wipe the hair from your arm. Repeat in all areas where you want hair removed.

Step 3

Trim the hair down with a pair of scissors or electric shears and shave the rest off. Wash your skin and leave it wet after you trim the hair, and then apply shaving cream. If you have sensitive skin, use a cream that is designed for sensitive skin. Take out a razor blade, place it against your skin and make short, smooth strokes to remove the hair. Wash the blade off every two or three passes to keep it clean.

Step 4

Purchase a waxing kit to pull the hair out quickly. Follow the heating instructions that come with the kit to heat up the wax. Dip the applicator tool into the wax and spread it across your arm hair. Let it set up for a few minutes and once it feels tacky, apply the cloth strip that comes with the kit. Flatten it out smooth on your skin and leave a corner up in the air. Grasp the corner firmly and pull down in a fast, forceful motion. Repeat in all areas where you have arm hair.

Step 5

Pluck out small areas of hair with a pair of tweezers. Grasp a single strand of hair close to the skin's surface. Pull straight out in a steady, but not fast motion. Repeat with all the hairs you want removed.

Tips and Warnings

  • Test a small area on your forearm with the depilatory cream before you go after a large patch to make sure you do not have an adverse reaction to the chemicals.
