A face mask can be a great way to keep your skin looking its best, Pusha Balea, an aesthetician at New York City's Bliss Spa, told "Cosmopolitan" magazine. But with so many types of face masks to choose from, it may be hard to know which one is best for you. Knowing your skin type is a good place to start. Then familiarize yourself with how to use the mask.
Choose Wisely
There's no one-size-fits-all mask, so choosing the best face mask for you depends on your skin type and what you want to accomplish, Kate Somerville, celebrity facialist and author of "Complexion Perfection!" told "Allure" magazine. If you're dealing with breakouts, look for a mask that has ingredients such as clay or salicylic acid. If you're trying to brighten up your complexion, look for a mask with glycolic acid, vitamin C or kojic acid.
Limit Use
Overusing facial masks can take a toll on your skin and cause problems including breakouts and dryness, says Balea of Bliss Spa. Most masks should only be used once a week, but if you have dry skin or notice blotches, dryness or blemishes after using a mask, you may need to cut back your mask use to every other week or even less frequently.
Mix it up
It's not uncommon to have different types of skin on different parts of your face. For example, you may have oily, acne-prone skin on your nose and dry, delicate skin on your cheeks. Don't be afraid to use two or more different masks on your face, applying them just to the areas that need them, David Bank, New York dermatologist and author of the book "Beautiful Skin: Every Woman's Guide to Looking Her Best at Any Age," told "Marie Claire" magazine. If only one area of your skin tends to break out, apply the mask to that area only so that you don't dry out the less oily parts of your skin.
