Protein is a necessary macronutrient that the body needs for wound healing, immunity, muscle growth and cell production. The Atkins Diet focuses on this nutrient. The idea is to get your body to burn stored fat for energy through a process called ketosis. When you go shopping while following the Atkins Diet, select foods that are high in protein and low in carbs.
Eggs
Eggs are a staple in the Atkins Diet. They are high in protein, have virtually no carbs, and as an added bonus, they are high in zinc, iron and B vitamins. You can also find egg substitutes in liquid form in the refrigerated section of the store.
Pork
Pork chops, bacon, ham and corned beef are all high-protein, low-carb foods to add to your list. Each one of these foods has over 18g of protein and no carbs at all. Cold cuts also fall into this category.
Beef
All forms of steak and beef are Atkins Diet foods due to their high protein and low carb contents. Ground beef burgers have about 20g of protein and 6g of carbs per 100g. Be aware that once you add ketchup or bread, the carb content goes up.
Chicken and Turkey
All forms of chicken and turkey are safe Atkins foods. This includes the breasts and the dark meat. Other types of fowl like goose, duck, pheasant and Cornish hens are safe as well.
Fish
Fish, such as salmon, herring, trout, tuna, sardines and tilapia are all high in protein and low in carbs, and they can be added to your list. Different types of shellfish like scallops, mussels, lobster and clams are all Atkins Diet foods as well
Dairy
Dairy products are high in calcium, protein and fat, and some of which have moderate amounts of carbs. Cheese, butter and cream are the ones you can add to your shopping basket. They are high in protein and have very little carbs. Mozzarella, cheddar, Gouda and Swiss all contain over 6g of protein and less than 3g of carbs per ounce.
Nuts and Seeds
Nuts and seeds, such as walnuts, almonds, Brazil nuts, sesame seeds, pumpkin seeds and sunflower seeds are all high in protein and low in carbs. They are also high in unsaturated fat which is a healthy type. Add these to your shopping list, as well as olive oil, canola oil or any oil that is derived from nuts or seeds.
Vegetables
With the exception of corn, potatoes, yams and sweet potatoes, most vegetables are low in carbs and they can be added to your list. The lowest carb varieties include asparagus, artichokes, broccoli, cauliflower, celery, cucumbers, spinach, mushrooms and all forms of lettuce.
Miscellaneous
Herbs and spices, such as tarragon, ginger, sage, basil, cilantro and black pepper are all safe on the Atkins Diet. They are very low in carbs and protein and they can be used to add flavor to your meats and vegetables.
