Location

Campgrounds
There are more than a half-dozen campgrounds near West Branch on the Au Sable River. Some have RV facilities, while others are geared for the camper wanting to experience nature to its fullest. There are two state park facilities located near West Branch. Both are rustic and natural, but can accommodate up to 40-foot trailers. Some offer electric service, while others have cabin rentals available, All have on-sight water and bath facilities. The River
A 23-mile stretch of the Au Sable River is designated as a National Scenic River area. There you are likely to see a bald eagle or an endangered Kirtland's warbler. You can also expect to reel in a daily limit of trout, walleye, pike and bass. Visit any of the canoe liveries in the area to enjoy a relaxing trip where you may see area wildlife, including river otters, mink, beaver and trumpeter swans. Fishing
The Au Sable River attracts thousands of fishermen each year where trophy brown, rainbow, brook and steelhead trout are the main attractions. Be aware that a nine-mile stretch of the river downstream is known as the "Holy Water." This is strictly a catch-and-release area. It consists mainly of sand and gravel. Events
Each July, the Au Sable River Canoe Marathon draws a crowd. The marathon, a tradition since the mid-20th century, is a 120-mile canoe race. The Au Sable River Canoe Marathon is noted as the premier long distance canoe race in North America. It is the world's longest, toughest, nonstop competitive canoe event. Paddlers compete on a 120-mile course, continuing throughout the night. The annual event is held the last full weekend in July. Call ahead for reservations to guarantee a campsite.
