Joint Health

Cod liver oil contains rich sources of vitamins A and D, as well as components called docosahexaenoid acid, also known as DHA and eicosapentaenoic acid, more commonly known as EPA. These components are known as omega-3 fatty acids found in most types of cold-water fish. Fatty acids like omega-3s help the body to develop and maintain bone and joint health, according to the University of Maryland Medical Center. Supplements like cod liver oil or other forms of fish oil may help soothe aches and pains of joint conditions like rheumatoid arthritis and pain caused by osteoporosis and other forms of arthritis.

Immune System Benefits

Components in cod liver oil may also help support immune system strength and function, according to the University of Maryland Medical Center. However, the medical center cautions that individuals should discuss its use, especially if you're taking certain medications such as warfarin or hormone medications. Levels of vitamin A found in cod liver oil have been determined to provide support for the body's ability to fight off illness, according to Dr. George T. Griffing, Professor of Medicine and writing for the Medscape Journal of Medicine. Pharmacological medicines containing cod liver oil has been used to treat conditions like acne vulgaris and promyelocytic leukemia.

Vitamin Benefits

Cod liver oil contains vitamin A, which is needed for health and maintenance of the skin and mucous linings found in many internal organs such as the stomach, the digestive track, the mouth and nasal passages, among others. Healing in many of the body's tissues and organs requires vitamin A. Cod liver oil also contains vitamin D, required for bone health, good dental formation and to help protect the body against illness and disease, suggests Dr. Ben Kim, acupuncturist and chiropractor based in Ontario, Canada.
