The Weight Watchers diet program assigns point values to foods and beverages so dieters can track the amount consumed each day. The daily point allotment is based on sex, age, height, weight and daily activity level. The point allotment decreases as the dieter loses weight and has a lower caloric requirement.
Base Points
The calculation of the daily Weight Watchers allotment of points begins with a base amount. A female weighing 218 lbs. begins with a base of two points, while men with the same weight begin with a base of eight points. Nursing women at a weight of 218 lbs. start with a base of 12 points if the infant is exclusively breast-fed, or seven points if the infant is nursed 50 percent of the time.
Weight and Height
Weight Watchers members increase their base amount according to their height and current weight. A 218-lb. person adds 21 points to the base. This number corresponds with the first two digits in the current weight. As the weight decreases, the daily point allotment also decreases. For example, a 218-lb. person who loses 10 pounds will decrease his daily point allotment by one point.
A 218-lb. member with the height of 5 feet 11 inches or higher increases the daily allotment by two points, while a member who is 5 feet 1 to 5 feet 10 inches increases it by one point. Members 5 feet tall and under do not add points for height, since their daily caloric requirements are less.
Age and Activity
Weight Watchers members add points to their daily allotment based on their age and daily activity level. A 218-lb. person age 17 to 26 adds four points; age 27 to 37, three points; age 38 to 47, two points; and age 48 to 58, one point. A Weight Watchers member weighing 218 lbs. who is older than 58 does not receive points for age because of a lower caloric requirement.
A 218-lb. person who leads a highly active life that requires physical activity throughout the day increases her daily point allotment by six points. Daily activity represents your lifestyle and job and does not include regular exercise sessions. A member who works on her feet for most of the day and moves around frequently receives four points. Members who are sedentary for most of the day receive two points.
Exercise Points
A Weight Watchers member who weighs 218 lbs. can increase his daily allotment each day by completing 30 minutes or more of high-intensity exercise. High-intensity exercises include biking, swimming, running or brisk walking, as long as it increases your heart rate. Add four points to the daily allotment after completing the high-intensity exercise. This amount drops to three points for a 146- to 185-lb. person.
Flex Points
All Weight Watchers members receive 35 flex points for use throughout the week. This value does not change as weight is lost. Flex points are given on a weekly basis and can be spread throughout the week or used all at one time for a special occasion.
