The most successful shortstops are mentally and physically talented, according to the QC Baseball website. They are able to anticipate defensive plays, and they also need strength, range and speed to get the ball to the right base. Often the shortstop is the best defensive player on a baseball team.

Anticipation

A shortstop's ability to anticipate is as important as his actual fielding, according to the Larry Baseball website. Practice watching the ball leave the bat so you can determine how and where the ball will bounce. Anticipation is crucial for fly balls, too.

Stance

A shortstop needs the right defensive stance to field balls well, according to Barton's Youth Baseball website. Your feet should be a little wider apart than your shoulders, and you should step forward as the pitcher throws the ball. Balance on the balls of your feet, and distribute your weight between both legs. Bend your knees and lower your bottom as if you were sitting in a chair.

Arms and Hands

Keep your arms low and almost straight in front of you when you field a grounder, according to Larry Baseball. If you let the ball get near or under your body, chances are good it will roll through your legs. When the ball approaches, put your hands in an "alligator" position. The glove is lower and facing up like an alligator's bottom jaw, and your throwing hand is above like the top jaw. This helps keep the ball from bouncing out of the glove and leads to a quick transition from glove to throwing hand. Handle the ball softly through the entire fielding process. Treat the ball as if it were an egg.

Feet

A shortstop's footwork is crucial for success. As you set up, the foot on your throwing side should be behind the foot on your glove side. Staggering your feet this way helps you keep stable and allows you to transition quickly to a powerful throwing position.
