Gallbladder Disorder Symptoms

The gallbladder is an organ sits below the liver, holding excess bile that will help the body with digestion. Substances within the gallbladder may crystallize, forming gallstones. The stones do not necessarily cause conditions of the gallbladder. In some cases, the stones may pass out of the body undetected, while in others, the gallstones may cause inflammation or other disorders. It is important to know the symptoms associated with gallbladder disorders in order to seek treatment.

Pain

Pain is a common symptom accompanies disorders of the gallbladder. Gallstones usually do not cause pain, but if a large stone blocks either the cystic duct or common bile duct, a person may experience severe pain near the upper right area of the abdomen just below the rib cage, states MedlinePlus. Inflammation of the gallbladder, called cholecystitis, may also cause pain. With this condition, pain often moves to the back or into the right shoulder. Painful attacks may last for a few hours, and then dissipate and not return. Some people experience routine, painful attacks.

Fever

If a gallstone work its way into the common bile duct, a person may experience fever and chills, states the University of Maryland Medical Center website. Inflammation of the gallbladder may also lead to an elevated temperature.

Changes in Stool

Stools may become clay colored if a gallstone has lodged in the bile duct. Chronic diarrhea can occur in patients with chronic cholecystitis or dysfunctional gallbladders, according to the University of Maryland Medical Center website.

Abdominal Discomfort

Some people with gallbladder disorders may experience abdominal discomfort. This may include tenderness, explains MayoClinic.com. The abdomen may also feel full or bloated.

Skin Discoloration

A gallstone lodged in the bile duct may result in changes to skin color. The skin and whites of the eyes will turn yellow, states MedlinePlus. This condition is known as jaundice and can lead to liver damage.
