Nursing professionals need to keep up with advances in medicine as well as issues in the field. Nursing journals provide a variety of information from educational research to practical, hands-on experience. They also can provide an outlet for nurses who have developed their own systems and innovations to write about them and share them with other professionals. Here are some of the journals available.

The American Journal of Nursing

The American Journal of Nursing was founded in 1900. It is published 12 times a year and is peer-reviewed. It provides analysis of news relating to nursing, commentary on issues in the profession and articles written from original research. The magazine also publishes an online monthly newsletter called AJN eNews.

Journal of Clinical Nursing

The Journal of Clinical Nursing is designed to be a magazine of knowledge exchange for clinical nurses. It is peer-reviewed and is geared toward an international nursing audience. It promotes discussion between clinical nurses about practices and policies. According to the editors, JCN spans the range of experience from student nurses to those with extensive hands-on experience. It is published monthly.

Advances in Nursing Science

This magazine generally is assigned reading for students in nursing doctoral programs. It also is peer-reviewed. ANS provides research topics in each issue, one to an issue.

Public Health Nursing

Public Health Nursing evaluates nursing programs, produces research reports and focuses on practice and theory of public health nursing. Topics include public policies, ethical issues, innovations in nursing and legal aspects of the profession.

The Journal of Professional Nursing

The Journal of Professional Nursing is published bimonthly. Articles have included "Teaching Excellence in Nursing Education: A Caring Framework," "Professional Ethics: Beyond the Clinical Competency" and "Bullying of Staff Registered Nurses in the Workplace."

Nursing Ethics

Nursing Ethics focuses on legal and ethical issues in the professional nursing workplace. It is published in Britain bimonthly. The topics for the magazine are decided upon by the International Editorial Board for broad appeal for nursing professionals.

Geriatric Nursing

The journal Geriatric Nursing focuses on nurses working with the elderly. Articles have included "Hypersexuality Among Cognitively Impaired Older Adults," "Facilitating Aerobic Exercise Training in Older Adults With Alzheimer's Disease" and "Quality Improvements for 'At Risk' Nursing Homes." It also includes columns focusing on legal issues, drugs, assisted living and acute care. It also has an extensive website.

CIN: Computers Informatics Nursing

This magazine features content for nurses dealing with practical nursing care and how it relates to the Information Age. Articles include "Nursing's Role in Nutrition," "Connected Care: Reducing Errors Through Automated Vital Signs Data Upload" and "Love, Hate or Indifference: How Nurses Really Feel About the Electronic Health Record." It is published six times per year.
