Teenage obesity is a growing problem. It's a serious one, as well, for obesity affects a teenager's long-term health, as well as her self-esteem. A teen who commits to losing weight in a healthy way can lay a solid foundation for the rest of her life while reaping the immediate benefits of a slimmer shape and a better frame of mind.

Weight Loss

Weight loss is the same for teen girls as it is for anyone else. To lose weight, a teen must burn more calories than she consumes. If a teen wants to lose a pound she must burn 3,500 calories. A healthy weight loss for a teen girl is steady and not drastic. Losing one to two pounds per week is a healthy way to lose weight and keep it off.

Realistic Goals

Setting realistic goals is important. A teen girl may feel a lot of pressure to be thin and be tempted to crash diet. Setting and reaching goals -- both a final goal and goals along the way -- can help a teen stay motivated and develop a sense of achievement.

Exercise

Exercise boosts weight loss by increasing calorie expenditure. Cardio exercise is the most useful tool, because it burns major calories in a short time. According to the American College of Sports Medicine, it's best to do cardio training for 30 minutes five days a week. Running, swimming, dancing and even kickboxing are great ways to break a sweat and burn major calories.

Nutrition

It is almost impossible to lose weight if daily nutrition is not on track. Choosing foods such as lean meats, fruits, vegetables and whole grains will help the dieting teen stay full between meals. High-fat and high-calorie foods such as cookies, chips and sodas should be eliminated or eaten rarely. It is important, however, to have an occasional treat. The dieting teen can allow herself a weekly slice of pizza or ice cream.

Support

The Mayo Clinic says that support is one of the most important parts of a weight-loss program. Supporting a teen girl by preparing healthy meals or working out with her will help her feel that she's not alone.
