Signs of Herpes in Men

Herpes is a sexually transmitted disease. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, at least 45 million Americans over the age of 12 have had genital herpes; however, it is further stated that the spread of this disease is decreasing in America. Herpes can be transmitted from one person to another without any signs of the disease in the infected person.

Time Frame

Generally, the initial outbreak of herpes begins approximately one to two weeks following exposure. This outbreak lasts two to three weeks. Subsequent outbreaks are usually shorter, lasting approximately three days. These subsequent outbreaks may be caused by various factors, including illness, surgery, menstruation, stress and fatigue. Another cause is extremely vigorous contact, such as that with sexual intercourse.

Sores

A man with herpes may experience small blisters, red bumps or open sores in his genital area, which includes the penis, urethra, scrotum, thighs, buttocks and anus. These sores may cause itching and pain. The sores may occur singly or they may occur in clusters. Open sores may ooze, while blisters and red bumps may pop and begin to ooze. As the sores begin to heal, a crust will develop.

Pain

Herpes may cause painful urination. This is especially true if the sores are located inside the urethra. Additionally, the entire genital area may be sore and tender as a result of the herpes.

Flu-like Symptoms

Flu-like symptoms are common in men with herpes. The symptoms may be worse during the initial outbreak. These symptoms include fever, headache and muscle aches. In some cases, these symptoms may begin up to a week before the sores appear.

Swollen Lymph Nodes

Swollen, and sometimes painful, lymph nodes in the groin area are another sign of herpes in men. The lymph nodes may feel like tiny pebbles, as they may be hard. The area around the lymph node may be very tender and movement of the legs may be painful.
